This section is for those interested in the proper maintenace of their vehicle. Refer to owners manual before taking my advice.
Basic Auto Knowledge
Oil and filter change every 3000 - 5000 miles depending on use and type of oil.
Check engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid and coolant every time you refuel. Low coolant is the number one contributor to overheating transmissions, which often result in failure. Check your coolant because it makes your car cool.
Do not drive under the influence, you are more likely to damage your vehicle, and you are less likely to stop if you encounter a vehicle malfunction which can lead to a major failure.
Check differentials and transfer case every time you change oil.
Change transmission fluid filter every 25,000 miles, or as suggested in the owners manual.
Inspect brakes every 5,000 miles, service as suggested in owners manual.
Keep battery free of corrosion.
Vehicles spark plugs and wires should be changed as suggested by the owners manual. Motor misses destroy transmissions, and torque converters.
Ball joints should be inspected at every oil change.
U-joints cause transmission damage and should be replaced if any vibrations are present, driveline may require balancing also.
Repair any fluid leaks (oil, coolant, trans fluid, etc.) Fluid is vital to each component without it lubricating the parts they will seize up. The fluid acts as a coolant and a lubricant, heat and friction stress steel.
Check tires for cracks, check tire pressure using recommendations from your vehicles owner manual.
If the Transmission feels like it is slipping, or the RPMs go up but you are not accelerating like you are accustom, stop and check the transmission fluid level in p/n on level surface(Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep check in neutral with E- brake set) if you are capable(some vehicles have no dipstick.). If the transmission is full, or you do not see any leaks and can not check the fluid you may try to manual shift the vehicle, if this improves the condition you transmission may have entered fail safe. Do not drive to avoid destroying your vehicles transmission.
Avoid water with your vehicle, moisture causes late model cars of age to develop electrical faults.
Avoid uneven surface that tend to damage the undercarriages of vehicles.
If the service engine light comes on have the vehicle scanned by a competent mechanic with a capable scanner such as the Snap-on Solus Scanner. We offer this service for free on most Domestic cars 1996 and newer. $10 for an Asian car.
It is very necessary on late model cars to keep the engine light off by repairing whatever issues are causing the light in order to prevent further damages, and to have an idea if another problem has developed. Transmission codes cause the vehicle to shift hard damaging internal parts, and the engine and exhaust systems(catalytic converter) can be destroyed by rich and lean conditions.
A well maintained vehicle can last many years. A typical automobile is considered worn out at 100,000 miles so you should stay on top of the service to maintain reliability.
We offer Free Diagnostic scans on Domestic vehicles 1996 and newer. We charge $10 for asian cars 1996 and up and we do not scan european cars.
