Index The 4L80/85E Transmission was introduced in 1991. Chevy replaced the non electronic 3 speed turbo 400 with the 4L80e. The 4L80e consists of 2 bands, five sets of clutches, three one way clutches, and a compound planetary gear set up. The key difference between a 4L80e and a 4L85e is the first has four pinion planets the second 5 pinion planets therefore more capable of handling torque and more expensive.
The 4L80e is electronically controlled. The 4l80e fail safes to 2nd gear starts, and loses overdrive if transmission power is lost.
Chevys heavy duty transmission in its day, the 4L80e, has seen a few design transformations, the first being in 1995 when the cooler lines where seperated to better lube the rear planet. The next design change was in 2001, when the new generation big block came out, the case was again changed relocating the top bell house bolt hole.
The 4L80E was the strongest Chevy transmission in its class when it was new, it will be surpassed by GMs new line of transmissions the 6L90.
4L80e Max gearbox torque:600lb.-ft.
4L60e Max gearbox torque:460lb.-ft.
6L90 Max gearbox torque:885lb.-ft.
The best way to destinguish between a 4l60e and 4l80e is to count the pan bolts.
4l60e pan bolts: 16
4l80e pan bolts: 17
